Law Enforcement
"Above all, I would teach him to tell the truth. Truth-telling, I have found, is the key to responsible citizenship. The thousands of criminals I have seen in 40 years of law enforcement have had one thing in common: Every single one was a liar."
- J. Edgar Hoover

Oversight
While the Federal Department of Justice holds ultimate authority over all law enforcement efforts in the United States, the jurisdictions are divided among four general levels of governance. These are Federal, State, County and Local.
And it should be noted that global law enforcement efforts largely follow these or similar distinctions. Nearly every nation allows smaller jurisdictions a degree of lattitude in policing their populations. For this reason, the oversight sections will examine the U.S. model, but also provide insights into differences worldwide.
Federal

Federal oversight of law enforcement in the U.S. is through the Department of Justice. The FBI is perhaps the most visible, but not the only agency under the DOJ.
State

While Troopers are the most visible of state law enforcement, each state has multiple agencies which serve specialized functions.
County

Each county in the U.S. has some form of law enforcement, the most visible being the Sheriff's Department.
Local

On a local level, cities, towns and villages have local law enforcement agencies, most often referred to as Police Departments.
International Law Enforcement

Every nation on the planet has some form of law enforcement. In these pages, we explore how each nation handles law enforcement.
How Can We Help Law Enforcement Today?
